[music |Stephen Colbert's White House Correspondents Dinner toast]

I had some notion that I would break the news to people by telling them in person, but it isn't that amazing of a story anyway. The upshot is that I proposed to Erin and she said yes.

We were walking at the Arnold Arboretum a few weeks ago, and when it's getting on toward winter, there are some beautiful sights, but nothing that is "romantic" to speak of. I ended up proposing to Erin at the Bonsai Collection, and it was incredibly awkward. She kind of didn't believe me at first, thinking I was joking. It was a sort of tearful moment, not particularly smooth or romantic like in movies, but it worked.

It's kind of strange, nothing's changed between us really except that the word "fiancée" is even more awkward than "girlfriend," and now we're more seriously thinking about a wedding, even though no date has been set. To a degree, we're mostly just trying to get our lives in gear and settle down. The wedding will probably happen some time in 2009.

Yeah, it was nice talking. It's so easy to take school for granted, when you get to see friends every day!

There is **NO** more wonderful feeling then knowing you've met this person who is going to be by your side. Someone you can laugh with, snicker with, bitch to/in front of, etc. Someone you pretty much trust and like more than any other.

Trust being the key bit.

So, as I've learned the past few months, the wedding bit can be a nightmare. Remember to keep pulling back from the details and laughing about said nightmare, it keeps it from being a beast with bite.

I'm so happy for you!

(p.s. I don't like financee - I'm going straight from "boyfriend" to "husband" if I can...)

I had a friend in college who referred to his fiancee as his "intended." I think that you should forgo girlfriend, fiancee, wife, spouse, etc. and tell it like it is: My beloved.

Although I have known you were going to propose to Erin for a couple of years now, I'm happy that you and Erin are committed to each other and it will be nice to celebrate that in whatever manner you and Erin decide. I believe that you and Erin are very lucky to have found each other and chose to make a life with each other. It's very sweet and you know that I wish you the best as I officially welcome Erin as my other daughter.

You are my favorite son and Erin will soon be my favorite daughter-in-law. I love you both intensely.

I'm of course insanely happy for you guys. Regardless of the situation I will make a speech at your wedding :) And it will be awkward.

Congrats! :D

I knew some people who were engaged forever but avoided the word fiancee and just used girlfriend/boyfriend. It is kind of an awkward word, yeah!
